Owners of this prestigious institution since 1987, the Garbutt family members are dedicated to ensuring that the welcome and stay experience is as sunny as the Caribbean island itself. Keenly aware of her establishment's influence on this azure-hued paradise, resort manager Adele Garbutt is committed to defending a precious territory that tourism should honor, not undermine: "We have a rainwater harvesting system and our energy is solar. My sister Bobbie has been managing 40 hectares of organic farmland that have belonged to the maternal side of the family since the 1940s. Working this fertile volcanic soil in a respectful way through agroforestry is one of the pillars of our vision of hospitality. We are the island's second largest exporter of nutmeg. As for the fruit and vegetables served at the hotel, they are sourced from our farm or from local certified organic producers."

Beniya Mukayu

KAGA-SHI, JAPON

 

In this traditional Japanese inn (ryokan), time seems to stand still. Third-generation owners Kazunari Nakamichi and his wife Sachiko run the place in keeping with the culture of Japanese hospitality. It is a meditative haven that invites guests to encounter themselves and their environment, as the hosts believe that the balance of all living things is interconnected. They encourage their guests to lose themselves in the luxuriant forest, the better to find themselves. It's a philosophy that echoes the term, mukayu, meaning richness in emptiness. Like filiation, biodiversity is preserved at the heart of this essential sanctuary and forest mosses have been inventoried in order to encourage guests to celebrate them on their walks. The couple’s children, Daisuke and Kosuke, will soon take over the establishment opened in 1928 and aim to perpetuate this ideology of holisitic benevolence.
